Lion Valley

Most of our produce exported is marketed under the brand.
 "LION VALLEY."

This seems very strange and confusing as the logo of Risseeuw Boerdery is  a wolf with sunset on the horizon,  but the name on all the cartons is Lion Valley.

Before 1994, exporting of fresh produce was all regulated in South Africa, and only done by Capespan.

Mr Lappies Labuschagne, a farmer from Burgersfort in the Limpopo province, wanted to export his sweet potatoes to the UK.  Capespan was not interested to become involved.  Under this condition he was allowed to export his own sweet potatoes.

The name of his farm was Lion Valley and that was the name printed on his cartons. His quality was extremely good and soon the Lion Valley brand had a good market share.  He had one problem – his volumes were too small and his marketing costs were too high.  He motivated us to plant sweet potato to increase volumes and to make the exports more viable.  Since then we were involved  in exporting.

Mr Labuschagne doesn’t farm any more but the name of his farm is now a registered brand.
